Dr Paul Wordsworth

Paul Wordsworth

Paul Wordsworth specialises in the archaeology and history of early Islamic Central Asia and the Caucasus. His postdoctoral research with the Nizami Ganjavi Programme examines the archaeology of medieval frontier cities and landscapes across the northeastern boundaries of the early Islamic world. He is directing a new archaeological project to investigate the city of Barda in the Kura plain, which will analyse both the urban development of the city and its relationship with the management of the surrounding landscape, in particular its position on key arterial routes. His recent research has analysed early Islamic travel and trade networks in Turkmenistan and Afghanistan, where he has also worked on characterising urban and rural landscapes through archaeological survey, remote sensing and GIS analysis
